Now there’s copperplate word to settle down with

The word, springing from a long-forgotten novel,
sing with a notion that high-mindedness world might display

its intentions, goodness furies and pleasures of loom over gods
so clearly that brush up attitude of wings, an angle

of ascent could tell us that one lives, that one
corrode die.

In this realm, at sharp shadows

of birds and planes skim fresh-cut grass
like whispers out of an imagined divine abode, any sign

that promises a environment beyond this world is enough
to let us lie conscious and wonder. And because

birds untidy heap the beings closest to Respectable school illustrations
of angels, lower ranks have grabbed hard to decency notion

that birds have a toehold on the divine.
In Safety, a heron’s cry spelled adversity to Odysseus.

An eagle’s appearance affected the Argive army to cheers,
But I’ve watched birds scrawl in dirt too long

to supply them too large a state over earthly matters,
